In the reading by Hubert Hermans, the story of Edward Said was included and I totally agree how stupid school rules on speaking English are. Even here in the Philippines so many private schools tell their pupils to speak English only so that they can “learn” but when the students grow up and suck at speaking Filipino they wonder why. I studied at the Ateneo de Davao and they also had an English rule back there in grade school. We never followed it but teachers going down the corridors would remind students to speak in English. Speaking English felt so unnatural as a child trying to enjoy playing with his friend. Why not speak Tagalog or Bisaya? It is your native language. I have nothing against teachers using English in academic settings but they shouldn’t try to enforce it everywhere in school. It gets so ironic when Buwan ng Wika comes and they make speeches about appreciating and being proud of our own language.
